Despite the increased durability of the new 'Ceramic Shield' on the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro, the phones can still crack if dropped face down, according to tests conducted by Allstate.

Four years ago, Apple debuted a new glass formulation on the iPhone 12, dubbed Ceramic Shield, and this year, it’s upping the game with an even stronger version in the iPhone 16 lineup that it claims is twice as durable and 50% tougher than the original.

This may sound bad… and certainly isn’t reassuring to hear. But as MacRumors points out in its coverage of the story, this is just a really hard test. The iPhone 16 Pro Max has glass on both front and back, and no glass-based smartphone has ever survived Allstate’s DropBot test.

A new generation of Ceramic Shield proved no match for gravity in the latest instance of iPhone 16 durability testing. Drop-testing on the iPhone 16 Pro Max by Allstate Protection Plans found that the 6.9-inch display on the new phone suffers some super-sized damage when dropped face-first on concrete.
