A Westland couple was charged this week after their 5-year-old son fatally shot himself with an unsecured handgun.

WESTLAND — A Westland couple is facing charges after their 5-year-old son died upon finding a gun in their home and shooting himself. Timithy Gravel, 32, and Heather LeBlanc, 29, were each arraigned this week on one felony count each of a safe storage firearms violation in front of 36th District Court Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath.

This is the seventh case of a child death related to an unsecured firearm this year in Wayne County, officials said.

His parents, Timothy Gravel, 32, and Heather LeBlanc, 29, both of Westland, now are facing charges under Michigan's new safe storage law, which went into effect in February and allows prosecutors to hold parents criminally responsible if their unsecured guns wind up in the hands of minors who then either kill or injure themselves or someone else with the weapon.
